Mid-Week Mini: A Dead Guy Was Elected Mayor
In this week’s Mid-Week Mini Episode, we talk about how a dead guy was elected Mayor.

Last week I had some fun with you and published a fake story about a pothole being elected mayor. But this week’s story is absolutely true. In one American town, a man actually won a mayoral election… after he had already died. The internet says it’s true.
In 1933, the small town of Frostproof, Florida found itself in the middle of one of the strangest elections in U.S. history. The country was deep in the Great Depression, and local politics were just as intense as anywhere else. In Frostproof, the mayoral race came down to two candidates – one of them was a well-liked local businessman named E. H. “Doc” Armstrong.
Armstrong had built a strong reputation in town. He was respected, connected, and seen as someone who could help guide the community through tough economic times. By all accounts, he was the favorite to win the election. There was just one major problem.
About a week before Election Day, Armstrong unexpectedly died.
Now, today, that would likely trigger a replacement candidate or a delayed election. But in 1933, especially in a small town like Frostproof, things weren’t so simple. His name remained on the ballot, and early voting had already taken place. There wasn’t a clear legal mechanism to remove him in time, and the election moved forward as scheduled.
So voters showed up… and many of them still chose Armstrong.
Some people either didn’t know he had died, while others knew and voted for him anyway as a statement. It was a mix of confusion, loyalty, and maybe even a bit of protest. When the votes were counted, Armstrong had won the election – posthumously.
Yes, Frostproof, Florida elected a dead man as mayor.
Of course, he couldn’t exactly take office. After the results were finalized, the town had to figure out what to do next. Ultimately, officials appointed someone else to serve as mayor, but the election result still stood as one of the strangest outcomes in American political history.
And Frostproof isn’t alone. Similar situations have happened in other elections across the U.S., where deceased candidates have won races due to timing, ballot rules, or strong voter loyalty. But this one stands out because it happened in such a small town, where everyone likely knew exactly what had happened – and voted anyway.
It’s a reminder that elections don’t always go the way you expect, and sometimes the rules lag behind reality. Even in something as structured as voting, human behavior can lead to truly bizarre outcomes.
Because sometimes, even after you’re gone… you can still win.
