300th Episode Special: The Emu War
It’s our 300th episode, so we’re doing things a little differently. Michael is joined in the studio by five returning guests and very funny people — Jimmy Mak, Glen Tickle, Dan Wilbur, Matt Donnelly, C.J. Johnson and Jay Black — to hear one of the strangest stories we’ve ever covered.
In 1932, Australian farmers were facing a serious problem: roughly 20,000 emus were tearing through wheat fields in Western Australia. The government’s solution was to send in soldiers from the Royal Australian Artillery armed with Lewis machine guns and thousands of rounds of ammunition. What followed became known as The Great Emu War, an actual military operation in which the birds proved so difficult to kill that newspapers began openly making fun of the soldiers.
For Episode 300, Michael tells the story while Jimmy, Glen, Dan, Matt, C.J. and Jay are along for the entire ride — reacting, asking questions and inevitably making the whole thing much more ridiculous.
Three soldiers. Two machine guns. 10,000 rounds of ammunition. 20,000 emus. What could possibly go wrong?
